From Trento
From Vermiglio village towards Velon you reach by car the crossroads with the unpaved road, which has been recently arranged and goes to the former Forte Pozzi Alti (Pozzi Alti Fort) (ml.1884). The road, about 6,2 km long, is accessible to everybody; you don’t need any permit. If you want to go on foot also on this way, you don’t need to go along the whole road, because you can take the path n. 233, which cuts the hairpin curves and takes to the former Forte Pozzi Alti in 1,30 hours. From the parking area you reach the refuge in about 1,15 hour along the smooth and attractive path n°233. This path has only a difference of height of 600 mt.and is very suggestive. It’s in fact a former austrian mule-track of the First World War which goes through a tunnel and under a little fall.
Another possibility is to leave from Stavel, you take the path n° 206, which later rejoins the path n° 233. Time: about 3,30 hours.
From Tonale Pass
If you want to leave from Tonale Pass, follow the so-called Sentiero degli Alpini, a former military route (n° 218). You can take this path not long after the beginning of the road which takes to the Presena Riverbed. After about 2 hours you reach the Forte Pozzi Alti and from here you take the path n° 233 which goes to the refuge.
Another possibility: you can take the path n° 234, which crosses the Passo dei Pozzi (Pozzi Pass) 2604 m.. When the sky is clear the sight can wander from Bernina, to Ortles-Cevedale-Group, Adamello and Brenta.
